In those parts of the country that are tropical or sub-tropical, holidaymakers sometimes get a bit worried about annoying insects and ask what to do.
This is one of those subjects that it's hard to be prescriptive about.
The fact of the matter is that many people visit hot northern parts of the country for their luxury holidays and see little or nothing by way of annoying insects. Yet other people can visit the same locations at the same time and claim to suffer serious annoyance and irritation of one sort or another due to our tiny fellow-inhabitants of this planet.
For a long time people who suffered with insects on holiday were written-off as 'whingers' or seen to be suffering from an over-imaginative disposition. In fact, medical science now knows that different individuals give off different bodily secretions and some of those can be more attractive to insects than others.
Of course, the exact specifics of where you are staying on holiday can make a difference too. A hotel located close to a marshy area or one near stagnant water might well be a lot more troubled by say mosquitoes than one closer to the coast or in a built up and well-drained area.
However, understanding these things is one thing, but what can you actually do about them?
The first thing that comes out of the above points is to choose your hotel and location carefully. If you are staying in top-class hotels then insects may be far less likely to be an annoyance than if you are staying somewhere more humble and perhaps a little closer to nature.
The second thing that applies is the age-old subject of insect repellent.
By and large, these are very effective at getting those crawlies to stop flying around your face and persuading those that have a tendency to try and munch you to go elsewhere. True, they are not 100% effective and yet again, presumably due to different hormones, they appear to work less well for some people than others.
Yet repellent is extremely unlikely to work against you, so it's probably better to try than not.
One piece of advice you wouldn't think it necessary to give in this country is to make sure you are reasonably covered up by clothes in certain situations. For example, hot temperatures, humid conditions and forestry will be fundamentally incompatible with skimpy beach-type clothing. In other words, don't offer too many acres of attractive chomp-able flesh to the local insect inhabitants.
Remember also that many biting and annoying insects tend to make their appearance after sunset. So if you are out and about or in your room sleeping at night, think about trying to keep at least some light clothing covering up much of your body.
Finally, don't overlook the importance of local advice. People that live and work in the area may have a wealth of extremely valuable local knowledge that you can draw upon and they'll usually be more than willing to share it with holidaymakers and other visitors.
In the final analysis, if you are taking a luxury holiday somewhere where it is hot and humid then there is a fair chance that you are going to need to share that environment with local insects. The vast majority of them will not be the slightest bit interested in you but some might be and see you as a walking snack.
Taking some of the above precautions might mean that you experience only minor problems or even none at all on luxurious domestic holidays.
